  • How the "Edit locally" functionality works

    Overview

    1. The web UI displays a "Edit locally" option in the file menu that links to a url with a protocol specific for the nextcloud client: nc://.

This is the handler used by the server to open a file locally which will allow the desktop client to open a document with the local editor when you click on the option "Edit locally" in your > Nextcloud instance.

    2. The user clicks on "Edit locally".

    3. The operating system sends the url to the desktop client.

    4. The desktop client opens the default application for the file type and locks the file.

Opening the file through the "Edit locally" on the web interface will work independently of the software used for editing.
